Description

What Are the ATV650D30N4 and ATV650D18N4 Drives?

The Schneider ATV650D30N4 and ATV650D18N4 are complete variable speed drives from the Altivar Process 650 series, rated IP55 for direct wall-mounting in harsh industrial environments without an additional protective cabinet. The ATV650D30N4 delivers 30 kW (40 HP) in normal duty and 22 kW in heavy duty, with a rated supply of 380–480 V AC, three-phase. The ATV650D18N4 covers the 18.5 kW (25 HP) range. Both units share the same firmware and control terminals as the ATV630, but the IP55 enclosure—resistant to dust and water jets—is the defining hardware difference.

Supplied as new original stock, these drives are intended for pump, fan, and fluid-management applications where the drive is mounted directly in the process area, and where the original unit has failed or is being replaced as part of a system upgrade.

Important Series Distinction: The ATV650 and ATV630 share the same firmware, fault codes, and control terminals, but the hardware enclosure is different. The ATV630 is IP21 and must be installed inside a clean electrical cabinet; the ATV650 is IP55 and can be mounted directly on a wall in a factory or pump room. They are not interchangeable as drop-in replacements without evaluating the installation environment.

Typical Fault Conditions & Diagnostic Reference

Because the ATV650 is designed for exposed environments, its fault profile includes both standard drive faults and environment-driven faults specific to the IP55 installation:

  • OHF (Overheat Fault) — The drive thermal state (THD) reaches 118% and trips; it can only be reset when THD falls below 90%. On an IP55 drive, OHF is frequently caused by dust blocking the external heatsink fans or cooling airways, rather than an internal component failure alone. Check the large heatsink fans on the back/bottom and the internal stirring fan before concluding the drive needs replacement.
  • InFi (Internal Error 18) — Communication interruption or internal error with the safety function module. The fault requires a power cycle to clear; if it persists, the safety option module may need replacement.
  • Dry Run warning — The drive monitors motor power factor; a sudden drop indicates the pump is running dry (air ingress). Check tank level and suction pipes before adjusting the underload threshold.

These are diagnostic reference points, not a guarantee that the drive must be replaced. Environmental checks (fan operation, heatsink clearance, ambient temperature ≤ 40°C without derating) should be completed before ordering a new unit.

Compatibility & Replacement Notes

Before ordering, confirm the following:

  • Application power requirement — The ATV650D30N4 is 30 kW normal duty / 22 kW heavy duty; the ATV650D18N4 is 18.5 kW. Confirm the motor’s actual load profile (normal vs. heavy duty) rather than relying on a single kW figure.
  • Enclosure environment — If the failed unit was an ATV630 (IP21) mounted in a cabinet, replacing it with an ATV650 (IP55) is mechanically and electrically possible, but the installation location must be re-evaluated for direct wall mounting.
  • Original nameplate MLFB — Confirm the exact catalogue number on the existing drive, including any suffix, as terminal configuration can vary.
  • If uncertain, send a photo of the original drive nameplate and the installation environment for review before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ATV650 and ATV630?

The firmware, fault codes, and control terminals are identical. The hardware enclosure is the difference: ATV630 is IP21 (cabinet-mounted), ATV650 is IP55 (direct wall-mount, dust and water-jet resistant).

Why does my ATV650 keep tripping on OHF?

On an IP55 drive, OHF is often environmental. Check that the external heatsink fans are running and free of dust/debris, and that the ambient temperature is within the derating curve. Internal component failure is possible but should be ruled out after environmental causes.

Is ATV650D30N4 30 kW or 22 kW?

Both, depending on duty. It is rated 30 kW in normal duty (40 HP) and 22 kW in heavy duty. Confirm the motor’s duty cycle before sizing.
